Yemen frees student held over parcel bombs

Recently Yemen has freed a woman held on suspicion of involvement in a plot to send parcel bombs on U.S.-bound planes after her arrest sparked protests by her fellow students. Governments, airlines and aviation authorities around the world are reviewing security after two parcel bombs sent from Yemen were intercepted on planes in Dubai and Britain on Friday. The bombs had all the hallmarks of al-Qaida, U.S. officials say.

I believe that the bombing was a plot similar to the 2009 Christmas day attempted bombing in an effort to express hatred and fear towards the U.S. Fortunately the bombing failed however the fact that the bombs were all hallmarks of al- Qaida draws suspection in my mind that the al-Qaida could be planning another terrorist attack. With that in to question I think the fact that bombs even managed to get onto the plan shows how much of a lack of security countries have, including our own and that governments need to crack down and double up security so another 9/11 does not happen.

Pakistan resists U.S. push to expand terror fight

Over the last few months the U.S. has pressured Pakistan to allow troops to move across the Afghan border as fast as possible to deal with a key taliban sanctuary in a effort to help turn the war around. Despite the U.S. plea, Pakistan's foreign minister said Sunday that his country will deal with a key Taliban sanctuary along the Afghan border on its own timeline. Analyst believe Pakistan is holding back on the offensive due to historical ties in the region of North Waziristan, a possible key to success in the Afghan war because the area serves as the main base for the Haqqani network — a militant group that military officials have said poses the greatest threat to troops in Afghanistan.The United States tried during the recent talks to encourage Pakistan to intensify its fight against extremists by offering a five-year, $2 billion aid package to purchase American arms, ammunition and accessories from 2012 to 2016.tan.

I believe that Pakistan is using the U.S. as a resource, stalling the process of dealing with the taliban in order to use the U.S. to gain a continuous flow of weapons. I also believe due to the fact that Pakistan may have relations with militants around North Waziristan, Pakistan would violate historical ties with its allies which would cause Pakistan to stall the U.S involve in that area. In short Pakistan is tying up loose ends and using the U.S. as a resource for its weaponry .
